M LPs, Cassettes, Printed Matter

MacAlpine, Tony: Edge of Insanity (USA) Shrapnel-USA/85   This is probably just about my favorite speed metal (or, “neo-classical fusion guitar,” as the promo sticker says) album of all time.  Joe Lalaina of Guitar World said “MacAlpine’s style could best be described as a cross between Allan Holdsworth and Yngwie Malmstee,” which is about right!  MacAlpine (who is also a more than competent keyboardist) is joined by bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Steve Smith (Vital Information, Journey).  All instrumental.  Recommended.  See also the Vinnie Moore entry.  Still/Sealed  $20

Machiavel: Jester (BEL) Gatefold/Harvest-ENG/77   One of the best prog groups from Belgium.  Both Jester and Mechanical Moonbeam are excellent!  M--/E++  $30

Machiavel: Mechanical Moonbeams (BEL) Gatefold/Harvest-BEL/78  VG-/VG  $30

Magazine: Ptolemaic Terrascope (ENG) Vol. 3, No. 2 (issue no. 10, Apr. ’92)   Excellent magazine; this issue features articles on: Shirley Collins, Hawkwind, Kaleidoscope, Tractor, Cul De Sac, Dr. Brown, Glenn Phillips, Gordon Haskell, Mooseheart Faith, Help Yourself, The Nice, The Grooveyard.  Comes with the EP (it’s new), which includes cool cuts from Shirley Collins, Mooseheart, Grooveyard, and Dr. Brown.    $35

Magazine: Bucketfull of Brains (ENG)  Issues 12, 31, 32, 34, 35  Each issue as loads of articles and plenty of reviews (many of them on neo-psych bands).  None of them include the single.  No. 12 features Robyn Hitchcock, Playn Jayn, Long Ryders, Gene Clark, Band of Outsiders, and Moberlys.  No. 31: Feelies, Seers, Miracle Legion, Galaxie 500, Hookfoot, Flamin’ Groovies; No. 32: Mock Turtles, The Saints, The Barracudas, Mystic Eyes, Grant Hart.  No. 34: Robyn Hitchcock/Soft Boys, Dead Moon, Eleventh Dream Day, Giant Sand, Walkingseeds, Red Temple Spirits.  No. 35: Tim Buckley, Steve Wynn, Game Theory, Louis Tillet, The Walkabouts, Brotherhood of Lizards, Jellyfish Kiss.   Issue 12: $15; Issues 31-35: $10 each

Man: Erotica/Don’t Just Stand There (ENG) 7" Sing./PS/Pye-FRA/69   From their debut LP, Revelation.  btc, sm sd  VG++/G  $30

Mandalaband: Mandalaband (ENG)  Chrysalis-USA/75   About as symphonic as a prog group can get: side one is an unbelievable piece with great guitar and keyboard playing, backed up in parts by an orchestra and choir.  Seems like every copy of this album I’ve ever had (domestic or import) tends to be on the noisy side.  In shrink.  E+/VG--  $16, or  pstr, sl rw  VG+/VG  $15

Mandrake Paddle Steamer: Strange Walking Man/Steam (ENG)  7" Sing./PS/RE/Gatefold/Bam-Caruso-ENG/85   Early English psychedelic band that included Martin Briley.  Both pieces are excellent; “Steam” is a smoking instrumental with great fuzz guitar and Farfisa organ.  Recorded in mono.  Includes insert.  Beautiful package with informative liner notes.  btc  VG++/E--  $20

Manhattan Transfer, The: Coming Out (USA)  Atlantic-USA/76   My favorite vocal group!  Includes Rundgren’s “It wouldn’t have made any Difference” and Michael Franks’ “Popsicle Toes.”  stobc, tpoc, troc, boc  F--/F  $2

Man Jumping: World Service (ENG?)  EG Records-USA/87   VG-/VG- $8

Mann, Ed: Get Up (USA) CMP-GER/88   What is this—a Zappa band reunion?  Mann, Chad Wackerman, Bruce Fowler and Walt Fowler...they’re all Zappa alumni.  Also includes bassist Doug Lunn and guitarist Mike Hoffman.  Mann shines on marimba, vibes and electronic mallet keyboards.  Audiophile pressing.  In shrink.  M/New  $16

Mannheim Steamroller: Fresh Aire Interludes (USA) American Gramaphone-USA/81  VG+/E-  $6

Manzanera, Phil: Diamond Head (ENG)  Atco-USA/75   Probably my favorite by him, it also features John Wetton, Eno, Robert Wyatt, Eddie Jobson, Bill MacCormick, and many others.  stnoc, sl rw  G/VG--  $8

Marillion: Script for a Jester’s Tear (ENG) Gatefold/EMI-ENG/83   I think it’s fair to say that this LP is to neo-prog what In the Court of the Crimson King is to classic progressive rock!  M---/M-  $20

Martin , Bohuslav: Jazz Inspired Compositions (CZE) Supraphon-CZE/71   Performances of the various pieces are by members of the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Wind Quintet, and Zdenek Jílek and Jan Paneka (both on piano).  E/E  $10

Marturion: Speciaal voor Jou (HOL)  Private-HOL/81   Folk music, I’m almost sure this is Christian music.  Anyway, not particularly good.  With insert.  sm tss, bss, boc  G-/G $5

Martyn, John: Glorious Fool (ENG) Duke-USA/81   With Phil Collins.  Eric Clapton also guests on one track.  pstp, pstr, btc  VG-/E-  $10

Martyn, John: Piece by Piece  Island-USA/86   SWCT  Still/Sealed $9

Martz, Jasun/The Neoteric Orchestra: The Pillory (USA) RE/Neoteric Music-USA/81   This is a truly interesting album, one that runs the gamut from soft, mellow passages to loud, dissonant ones, with things such as Magma-like choir passages in between.  Martz is a multi-instrumentalist, and one of the instruments he features extensively—and beautifully—is the Mellotron.  He is supported by many other musicians on this work, among them Eddie Jobson, Ruth Underwood, and Paul Whitehead (yes, the one who did the Genesis covers!; he plays bowed cymbal and percussion).  Don’t miss out on this one!  This reissue came out a few years after the first edition and has a completely different cover.  sl rw  E-/E--  $25

Masked Marauders, The: The Masked Marauders (USA) Deity-USA/69   In partial shrink.  With insert.  cc,  btc, sl cw, bss  VG---/F-  $12

Master Cylinder: Elsewhere (USA) Inner City-USA/81   Hard-to-find but good jazz rock with a Canterbury flair at times from this Texas-based group.  Lineup includes keys, guitar, bass, and drums, but various guest play woodwind and brass instruments, and there’s even a Serge modular keyboardist!  A promo writeup states: “The music of Master Cylinder is a smooth blend of everything from tight ensemble composition to totally free improvisation; complex layers of polyrhythms to surging waves of pure sound; sections and bits of compostion surfacing from the flow and then redissolving.”  In shrink.  E+/E  $40, or with promo insert, cc, sl cw  VG+++/E++  $38

Material: Red Tracks (USA)  Red Records-USA/85   E/M  $9

Material: Temporary Music (USA)  Celluloid-FRA/80   rw, btc  G/VG+++ $9

Material: One Down (USA)  Elektra-USA/82   wlp, pstp  G++/VG- $7

Matrix: Wizard (USA) Warner Bros.-USA/78  Electric jazz, no guitar but plenty of synths and brass.  Would probably appeal to fans of (Ian Carr’s) Nucleus.  Includes two black and white photos, presumably of band members (one of them is wearing a Matrix t-shirt).  rw, sm troc  E+/E---  $11

(Matsui,) Kazu: Time No Longer (JAP) Baystate-JAP/81   Featuring Larry Carlton, Lee Ritnour, Steve Lukather, and Roben Ford.  With insert.  rw, boc  G/M  $15

Maxophone: Maxophone (ITA)  Gatefold/Pausa-USA/75   Essential Italian prog.  rw, cc G-/G+ $42

*May Blitz: May Blitz (ENG)  RE/Gatefold/BGO-ENG/89?   M/E $15, or M/M $18

McBride, Anne T.: Sands of Gold (USA?) Honey Bee-USA/82   All instruments (oud, Casio, drums, zills, voice, and kanun) played by McBride.  The music is her musical interpretations of the “breathless beauty” of the Middle East.  Anne has a nice, haunting voice.  Between the reverb-enhanced singing and the Middle-Eastern elements, this ends uping having an almost basement-psych/folk/mystical feel at times.  Great story book/fantasy cover, and the vinyl is yellow (“gold”!).  rw, bss  VG++/G--  $32

McFerrin, Bobby: Spontaneous Inventions (USA)  CASS/Blue Note-USA/86   Includes Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jon Hendricks, and Manhattan Transfer as guests.  New/New $5

McLaughlin, John: My Goals Beyond   RE/Elektra/Musician-USA/82   Reissue of his second LP, with completely different cover.  pstp VG/VG++ $10

McLaughlin, John/Al Di Meola/Paco De Lucia: Passion, Grace & Fire (ENG/USA/SPA) Columbia-USA/83   This is actually not a normal copy of the album; it is what’s known in the mastering business as a “ref,” or a lacquer reference disc.  A ref is very heavy and weighs about twice what a regular record weighs.  This ref was made at Sterling Sound in New York, and comes in a special box (some of the corners are split) made by the mastering studio.  It’s interesting to note that some of the song titles changed between the mastering stage and the actual release to the public: “Orient Blue Suite” was originally “Al’s Suite” and “Sichia” was “Rhumba.”  There aren’t too many of these floating about (maybe five or ten total).  VG++/E---  $30

McWilliams, David: Lord Offaly (ENG)  Pye-USA/73   Singer-songerwriter/folk artist.  tss, bss, stnobc, rw, cw  F+/G+++  $16

Medicine Head: Rising Sun/Be My Flyer (ENG) 7” Sing./Polydor-ENG/73  “Rising Sun” went to number 11 on the charts in the U.K.  NA/VG+  $18

Menestriers, Les: Les Menestriers (FRA) Vanguard-USA/74   Early music with masterful use of archaic instruments, including lute (a personal fave), recorders, kummhorns, viola da gamba, rebec, etc.  Outstanding ensemble singing, too.  Great album, one that wouldn’t be here if I didn’t already have my own copy.  tss, rw, cw  G---/VG--  $15

Mental Landscape: Stages of the Dream (USA) Enchantress Music-USA/88   One of those records whose covers makes you think that it’s just got to be progressive rock.  Well...not exactly.  More like gloomy neo-psych with a basement vibe.  Female vocals and violin add a nice touch.  With booklet.  This is a future riser.  rw, scrobc  VG-/E+++  $40

Merritt & the Meteors, Max: A Little Easier (AUS)  Arista-AUS/75   Predominantly bluesy rock.  boc, sm stnobc  VG+/F-  $7

Metheny, Mike: Kaleidoscope (USA)  MCA Impulse!-USA/88   Still/Sealed $7

Metro: Metro (ENG) Sire-USA/77  Pretty impressive lineup: Peter Godwin, Duncan Browne, and Sean Lyons, with John Giblin and Simon Phillips helping out.  In shrink.  cc  E+++/M--  $20

Micus, Stephan: Listen to the Rain (GER) Japo/ECM-GER/83   Micus’s own unique brand of world music finds him combining such instruments as Spanish guitars, dilrubas (Indian instrument), steel string guitar, suling (Balinese), tamboura, and shakuhachi (Japanese).  Side one is a 20 minute piece.  btc, sl rw  G++/VG---  $12

Mike and the Mechanics: Mike on Mike (ENG)  Atlantic-USA/85   Side one contains the complete interview (questions—asked by Dan Neer—and answers) and side two contains the answers only.  Amazingly enough, he spends a fair amount of time talking about Genesis’ formative days and early years.  Most of the rest of the interview is taken up by talking about Mike’s solo career, especially Mike and the Mechanics.  Contains the cue sheet insert with all the questions.  E/E++ $25

Miles, Buddy: A Message to the People (USA)  Gatefold/Mercury-USA/70   dh, cw  F+/F++ $5

*Miles’ Silverlight, Barry: Magic Theater (USA)  London-USA/75   Listen up, fusion fans!  I just recently discovered Barry Miles (well, better late than never, I guess).  He’s truly an awesome keyboardist, and he and his bandmates cook up a musical storm.  Miles engages in some of the hottest Moog soloing that I’ve heard in a long while (he also plays acoustic and electric piano, organ, clavinet, vibes and percussion on this LP), with playing that harkens to talents like Jan Hammer and Kit Watkins when he was a bit more adventurous.  Some of you may recognize Miles’ name from his appearances on Al DiMeola’s Land of the Midnight Sun and Casino LPs.  If you like fusion done the old-fasioned way, you need this album.  Two songs are over 11 minutes.  I bought a bunch of these because there are a lot of you out there that would really love this.  cc  Still/Sealed  $20

Miller, Harry: Children at Play (S. AFR) Ogun-ENG/74   Avant-garde jazz.  Miller (Mike Westbrook Orchestra, Brotherhood of Breath) plays double bass, flute, and percussion effects.  Nasty scratch at the beginning of side two.  Otherwise, plays as indicated.  sc, sss, blc, sm tss, sd, boc  F++/F+++  $15

Mina: Del mio Meglio Numero Quattro (ITA)  PDU-ITA/77   Popular Italian female artist; with a great gimmix cover: four panels fold out into a cross shape.  sl sd, spltsm, stobc, woc  G/G-  $35

Minglewood Band: Minglewood Band (CAN) RCA-CAN/79  Don’t get too excited, but the cover sports artwork that is obviously inspired by Roger Dean (the irony here is that the name of the company that generated the art is called Genesis Art!).  Alas, the music is closer to country rock and the like than to Yes.  rw, btc  VG+++/VG-  $10

Mini: Úton a föld felé (HUN) Pepita-HUN/79  Hard rock/prog band from Hungary with lots of nice flute playing.  sl btc  E/VG+  $20

Mission, The: Virgin (USA?) DBL LP/Paramount-USA/72   Religious rock opera performed by The Mission (not the ’80s group).  Boxed set, with libretto.  ph  VG/VG-/VG--  $32

Mizzouri Foxx: Trapped Live (USA)  Brother Studio Prod.-USA/79   Local group on the same label as Chakra that played killer drivin’ hard rock fronted by great guitar and organ playing.  If you like groups like Deep Purple, I think you’ll get a kick out these guys—the album was recorded live, and they really pull out the stops.  The back cover is autographed by the band members.   RNGWR  F/F-  $30

Mogul Thrash: Mogul Thrash (ENG)  RCA Victor-ENG/71   This album seems to be best known for the fact that it marks John Wetton’s recording debut—and even back then his bass work stood out (he also sings and plays guitar some).  Real nice hard rock with occasional jazzy arrangements.  By the way, Brian Auger also plays on one track and produced the album.  scroc, tss, bss  G+/G- $80

Mona Lisa: Avant Qu’il Ne Soit Trop Tard (FRA)  Crypto-FRA/78   With booklet.  Almost invisible blade cut on spine.  stobc  G-/G++ $30

Mona Lisa: Le Petit Violon de Mr. Gregoire  Gatefold/Crypto-FRA/77   trol  E/VG-- $31

Mondshine, Clara: Memorymetropolis (?) Innovative Communications-USA/83   “Music for meditation with Asian influences.  Synthesizers programmed to melt tabla sounds with flowing themes ala Tangerine Dream.  Asian rhythms with Western music, accentuated by movements that whisper of Indian temple songs”  (Thank you, advertising insert.)  In shrink.  sm sc, btc  E/M-  $14

Montrose, Ronnie: The Speed of Sound (USA) Enigma-USA/88   All-instrumental, and the title kind of says it all: if you like folks like Vai and Satriani, you’ll probably like this, too.  In shrink wrap.  See also the entry for Gamma.  sm sc, btc  E/M  $15

Mood, The: Passion in Dark Rooms (ENG)  RCA-USA/83   Mini LP.  In shrink.  sm sc  E+/M-  $4

Moody Blues, The: On the Threshold of a Dream (ENG) Gatefold/Deram-ENG/69  Comes with the booklet stapled into the middle of the gatefold.  Glossy cover.  Sorry about the record condition (which actually looks way better), but I’m offering it because I hardly ever see this with the booklet.  sl rw, sl cw, sm wol  VG++/P+++  $3

Moore, Christy: Voyage (IRE)  Atlantic-USA/89   Christy Moore has played with Moving Hearts and Planxty, as has Donal Lunny, who also plays and produced the album.  Other names include Paddy Maloney, Sinead O’Connor, and Elvis Costello (don’t worry, it’s only one track of backing vocals).  sm sc  VG-/E- $11

Moullé, Alain: Guitare Instrumentale (13e avenue) (FRA) RE/Musea Parallele-FRA/90  Originally released in 1982, this is a lovely guitar showcase piece.  Moullé shines on classical (“nylon”) guitar, and he’s joined by Robert Legall on steel-string and some electric guitar.  Keyboards (low key) and bass fill out the rest.  btc  E++/New  $18
