R LPs, Cassettes, Printed Matter

Rabbit: Broken Arrows (ENG)  Gatefold/Island-USA/73   Rabbit is John Bundrick of Free, who is helped here by several other members of Free, and Jim Capaldi, amongst others.  woc accounts for the F- grading.  woc, ph  F-/VG+ $9

Rabbitt: Boys will be Boys! (ENG) Capricorn-USA/76   Early band of Trevor Rabin’s, (he plays lead guitar, vocals, and keyboards) who wrote or co-wrote all pieces here, except for Jethro Tull’s “Locomotive Breath,” which they do a cool cover of.  cw, boc  G+++/VG+++  $19

Rabindra: All I See is You (USA) Gatefold/Takoma-USA/73   His full name is Rabindra Danks, and this is one of those many mystical/Hindu type records.  Produced by John Fahey, the music is mainly folky.  I found it interesting that Don Preston helps out on Moog and a couple other guys play the Buchla.  sm tss, rw, stnobc  VG---/G+++  $20

Rabin, Trevor: Trevor Rabin (USA)  Chrysalis-USA/78   Yeah, I know, he was born in South Africa, but he’s a U.S. citizen now.  Some of the material on this record is remarkably similar to that of 90125, especially “Getting to Know you Better.”  pstp, stnoc  G++/VG--  $20

Rabin, Trevor: Face to Face (USA)  Chrysalis-ENG/79   His second solo album, not released in the U.S.  All instruments by Trevor, except for drums, where he gets some help from Dave Mattacks.  VG/M-  $35

Rabin, Trevor: Interview with Dan Neer (USA)  Elektra-USA/89   Promo only item that was released in support of his Can’t Look Away LP, his fourth solo.  Did you know that the material on 90125 was originally slated to make up his fourth solo album, but the Yes thing happened, so he used it for that.  Interesting interview.  Comes in a plain black jacket with a large promo sticker.  NA/M-  $20

Racer X: Live-Extreme Volume (USA)  Shrapnel-USA/88   Speed metal with great twin guitar harmony leads; Paul Gilbert is one of the guitarists.  Still/Sealed $8

Rai, Vasant: Spring Flowers (?) Vanguard-USA/76   A jazz-Indian fusion from this gifted sarod player who also performs on guitar flute and tambura.  This will certainly be of interest to Oregon fans, as Collin Walcott, Glen Moore, and Paul McCandless are all here, as is violinist Jerry Goodman and guitarist Dilip Naik.  Nice cover.  rw, sl cw  G++/VG  $24

Rajésh: Infinite Fusion (Explorations in Musical Synthesis) (IND) Om-IND/82   R jésh plays guitars, keyboards, and sings.  He is accompanied by two sitar players, a flautist, a santoor player, and a tabla player.  On the Western side of things, the recording also includes contributions from such sidemen as Kevin Peek, Francis Monkman, Dallas Smith, Brian Odger, and Simon Philips.  As you might have guessed, this is something of an East-meets-West experiment, and it works pretty well.  rw, btc, sm trobc  G--/VG--  $35

Ram: Where? (In Conclusion) (USA) Polydor-USA/69  A great blending of hard rock, psych, spaciness, and prog, with guitar, vocals, woodwinds, piano, bass, and drums.  The 21-minute piece on side two is positively mind-blowing!  Getting hard to find all the time!  (Side two is actually at least G.)  pstr, rw, scroc, bss  G++/F+++  $44

Ramos, Uña: La Flute Des Andes (BRA?) Le Chant du Monde-FRA/75   As the title suggests, this is Andean flute music and all manners of ethnic flutes (some pre-Columbian) are used, as well stringed instruments, such as the charango, requinto, bandurria, guitar, and percussion instruments.  Two skips on one track.  btc, scroc  VG---/F-  $4

Random Hold: Random Hold (ENG) Polydor-ENG/79  Five-song mini LP, produced by Peter Hammill.  stoc, rw, btc, boc  G+/E++  $12

Random Hold: The View From Here (ENG) Polydor-ENG/80  Produced by Peter Hammill, at times sounds like a cross between new wave and progressive.  With Bill MacCormick (801, Matching Mole, Phil Manzanera, Eno, Quiet Sun) on bass.  stnoc  G+++/M-  $20

Random Hold: Etceteraville/Precarious Timbers (ENG)  7" Sing./PS/Polydor-ENG/79   boc, stnoc  G++/VG-  $11

Random Hold: What Happened/Cause and Effect (ENG)  7" Sing./Polydor-ENG/80   NA/VG---  $10

Rapp, Tom/Pearls Before Swine: Sunforest (USA)  Blue Thumb-USA/73  E++/VG+++  $16

Rare Bird: As Your Mind Flys By (ENG) Gatefold/Charisma-ENG/70  Heavy keyboard-driven prog classic.  The side-long suite “Flight” is amazing.  Textured cover.  rw, stobc, cw  G/G+++  $25

Rare Bird: Epic Forest (ENG) Polydor-USA/72  Their third release.  rw, btc, sl boc  VG+/VG++  $15

Rare Illusion: Didn’t I/Just Two/Never Say Goodbye (USA)  7" Sing./PS/.22 Music-USA/82   All-girl rock group from Illinois.  “Didn’t I” is a straight ahead rock song that could have been a hit; the other two are soft rock.  VG-/G--  $12

Rattles: The Witch (GER) Gatefold/Philips-GER/71   Considered to be the German equivalent of the Beatles, but the female vocalist adds a presence that reminds me of early Earth & Fire.  The first track has a bad scratch that runs across most of it.  sl rw, sm bss  VG+++/F--  $20

RDM: Contaminazione (ITA) RCA-ITA/75   Enlish language version, released two years after the Italian language version, with the same cover as the Peters release.  One of the great Italian progressive rock masterpieces.  G(-)/G-  $75

Reed, Lou, and The Velvet Underground: Super Star   Gatefold/Armando Curcio Ed.-ITA   Same series as the Gentle Giant LP, nice booklet.  E  Still/Sealed $25

Refugee: Refugee (ENG/SWI) Charisma-USA/74  No prog lover should be without this album.  Features Brian Davison and Lee Jackson, formerly of The Nice, and Patrick Moraz (Yes, Moody Blues, Mainhorse), all of whom probably never played better than they do on this LP.  A must—definitely a desert island record for me.  sd, rw, btc, cw  F--/F+  $3, or pstr, rw  VG-/G--  $6

Reico: Off Limits (JAP)  Invitation-JAP/85   With insert.  sl rw, sd  G++/VG+ $5

Reinhardt, Babik: All Love (FRA) R.D.C.-FRA/88   Son of Django!  This album finds the guitarist following in his legendary father’s footsteps (he’s played with the likes of Didier Lockwood, Birelli Lagrene, Grapelli, Larry Coryell etc.).  With interesting four page promotional bio/discography.  btc, sl scroc  VG/M-  $14

Reinhardt, Django: The Versatile Giant (FRA)  Inner City-USA/78   Generally regarded as the greatest jazz guitarist of his time, his style has influenced countless others since.  The material included was recorded between 1934 and 1951; some cuts include Stephane Grappelli, and one of the pieces is previously unreleased.  rw, scrobc, stnobc  G-/VG-- $8

Relph, Eric: Pretty Darlin’ (USA) Evy Pollen-USA/78   This one’s all over the board stylistically, ranging from mellow folksy tunes (America, CSNY, and Bread would be proud!) to rock.  And for those looking for the mighty Mellotron on obscure recordings, this one qualifies, as it’s used on one track.  Nice album.  stnoc  VG+++/E-  $40

Renaud, Alain: Out of Time (FRA)  Disjuncta/Urus-FRA/76   btc  E-/M--  $35

Renaud (,Alain): Renaud (FRA)  Disjuncta-FRA/75   Co-produced by Richard Pinhas, this is a nice combination of fusion and spacy guitar work.  This was Renaud’s first release, and would probably appeal to most fans of Heldon or Pinhas.  VG-/G++ $33

Renaissance: Ashes are Burning (ENG) Sovereign-USA/1973  Includes the masterpiece “Ashes are Burning,” a marvelous showcase for Annie Haslam’s vocal range.  If you enjoy prog folk-rock or progressive rock with an emphasis on acoustic instrumentation (but by no means exclusively so), these are for you!  btc, sl rw  VG+/VG++  $12

Renaissance: Prologue (ENG) EMI-JAP/72?  I can’t tell if this came out in 1972 or if it was pressed later.  In any case, this is essential early Renaissance.  With insert.  M---/E--  $24, or Gatefold/Sovereign-USA/72  rw  VG+++/F+++ $3

Renaissance: Renaissance (ENG) Elektra-USA/69  This is the original lineup that included Keith Relf (ex-Yardbirds), Jane Relf (his sister, in possession of a lovely voice), Jim McCarty, John Hawken (later of the Strawbs), and Louis Cennamo.  Not at all what later became the “classic” lineup, but this is still a great album, and well worth owning.  Cover art by Paul Whitehead (Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, etc.).  cw, rw, btc, troc, woc, wol  F-/G---  $10

Résonance II: Toutes Directions (FRA) Cabana Music-FRA/85  Quirky jazz-rock quartet (guitar, synths, sax, bass, drums) whose sounds, despite recording this sole album in the 1980s, has a distinct 1970s spirit to it.  Gets compared to Gong, Moving Gelatine Plates, and East of Eden.  E+++/M---  $60

Resurrection Band: Rainbow’s End (USA)  Star Song-USA/79   Killer Christian hardrock group that brings to mind Led Zeppelin at times.  Sought after and well worth having.  Beautiful die cut cover.   VG-/VG-  $20, or sm troc  F/VG(-)  $14

Return to Forever: Romantic Warrior (USA) Columbia-CAN/76  Generally considered to be the most progressive of the four LPs they recorded during their “classic” fusion period.  You can’t argue with the lineup: Chick Corea (keys), Stanley Clarke (bass), Lenny White (drums), and Al DiMeola (guitar).  rw  VG++/VG+  $8

Revolutionary Ensemble: Revolutionary Ensemble (USA) ESP-USA/72   Avant-garde jazz trio comprised of percussionist Jerome Cooper, bassist Sirone, and violinist Leroy Jenkins.  Two long pieces.  Quadrophonic.  btc, rw, sss, bss  F++/VG+  $24

Reyes, Jorge: Comala (MEX) Producciones Exilio-MEX   I like to think of this as a companion album to his Ek-Tunkul.  Both are an interesting combination of ethnic, electronic, and progressive music.  This one includes Arturo Meza and the band La Tribu.  With insert and in shrink.  sm btc  M--/M---  $49

Rhee and the Orientals, Susan: Psychology/I Love You I Hate You (USA)  12" Sing./PS/Real Records-USA/84   I confess to buying this just because Susan plays the electric violin and the violectra, whatever that is.  In shrinkwrap.  btc  VG++/E- $3

Riba, Pau: Electroccid Accid Alquimistic XOC (SPA) Gatefold/Movieplay-SPA/75  Has been referred to as the Daevid Allen of Spain.  Eduardo Bort guests on a track.  tpoc, cw, wol  VG/VG  $88

Ricchi & Poveri: Penso Sorrido e Canto (ITA)  Gatefold/Cetra-ITA/74   Arranged by Il Volo’s Vince Tempera (who also plays keyboards) and produced by Le Orme’s Reverberi, but the music’s still basically typical Italian pop.  VG+/F+++  $13

Riemann, Kurt: Electronic Nightworks (GER?)  Innovative Communication-USA/84   Performs works by Handel, Ravel, Satie, and Bach on synthesizers.  cc  E-/E- $11

Riff Raff: Robot Stud (FIN) Mirror-FIN/82   Sounds a bit like Finland’s answer to Slade to me.  sd, boc, rw, cw, btc  F/G-  $7

Riley, Terry: Happy Ending (Music Composed for the film “Les Yeux Fermes”) (USA) Warner Bros.-FRA/72  bss, sl rw, sm wol  VG++/VG++  $30

Ripoche, Michel, and Andre Demay: Contes Musicaux (FRA)  Atlantic-FRA/77   G-/E $11

*Rise: Becky/Future Love (USA?)  8" Sing./Gatefold/Mystic Records-USA/80   Yes you read right, an 8" single.  It’s square, blue and white marbled vinyl, and part of a limited pressing of 500.  Comes in a gatefold folder.  VG-/New $10

Rising Storm, The: Calm Before... (USA)  RE/Stanton Park-USA   Exact reissue of one of the holy grails (can you have more than one holy grail?) of garage psych.  Anyway, now out of print, and this is my last copy.  See also Sandoz Lime.  btc  Still/Sealed  $75

Ritenour, Lee: Captain Fingers (USA) Epic-USA/77   My favorite from this fine jazz/fusion guitarist.  There’s a few pin holes in the bottom left hand corner of the cover.  VG/E  $15, or no pin holes  M--/E- $13

Ritenour, Lee: The Captain’s Journey (USA)  Elektra-USA/78   VG++/VG++ $5

Ritenour, Lee: Lee Ritenour in Rio  Gatefold/JVC-JAP/79   Digital, audiophile recording.  With insert.  stoc  E/E++ $20

Roedelius, Hans-Joachim: Durch Die Wüste (GER)  Sky-GER/78   With Möbius and Konrad Plank.  E+++/M-  $25

Rogers, Michael: Digital Steel (USA)  PRC-USA/82   Virtuoso steel drum playing that ranges from pieces penned by Rogers to a cover of “Stairway to Heaven.”  Audiophile recording.  rw  VG--/VG  $12

Roland, Paul: A Cabinet of Curiosities (ENG)  New Rose-FRA/87   Joined here by the Hellfire Club.  Comes with a 7" single (which plays about VG) containing two songs not on the album.  btc, sm woc  VG++/VG++  $28

Roland, Paul: Danse Macabre (ENG)  Bam Caruso-ENG/87   New psych artist who has been compared to a cross between early Al Stewart and Syd Barrett, which is not at all inaccurate.  As the title implies, some of the pieces here do have a macabre, sinister feel to them.  rw, boc  VG--/VG-  $23

Romero, Angel: Giuliani: Le Rossiniane; Variations on a Theme of Handel (SPA)  CASS/RE/Angel-USA/79   Digitally remastered.  New/New $5

Rose, David: Distance Between Dreams (USA)  Gratte-Ciel-FRA/77   American-born violinist who played in the French fusion group Transit Express.  This is his first solo album, produced by ex-Magma bassist, Laurent Thibault.  Good jazz-rock with lyrical violin playing.  In shrink.  trobc  G/VG $24

Rosewood: Rosewood (USA)  Private-USA   Folk music a bit like CSN, probably from the early or mid 70’s.  The grade for the vinyl is because of a manufacturing defect that causes the music to sound saturated in one section.  woc, rw  F/F $7

Rotondi: Play On (USA)  ROM-USA/88   sc  Still/Sealed  $9

Rotondi: Preaching + Confessing (USA)  ROM-USA/89   It’s yet another polka/tango rock band!  In shrink wrap.  sc  E/New  $9

Roxy Music: Manifesto (ENG)  Atco-USA/79   In shrink.  SWCT  E+/M- $7

RPM: Phonogenic (ENG?)  Warner Bros.-USA/84   In shrink wrap.  sc, btc  VG++/M-  $5

*Ruins: Ruins (JAP) Shimmy Disc-USA/90   Apparently also sometimes referred to as Stonehenge.  Warp only causes one or two “whooses” on each side, otherwise, plays as graded.  sm scroc  E-/M-  $20, or CASS  dh  Still/Sealed $9

*Ruins: Burning Stone (JAP)  Shimmy Disc-USA/92   Ruins is truly remarkable.  It consists of only two guys, one on drums and vocals, the other on bass and vocals, but you’d never believe it by hearing the music.  These two manage to cook up a barage of noisy sound that is often very suggestive of Magma, with very heavy riffing and relentless, driving rhythms—and I have no idea what language they’re singing/chanting in!  sc  Still/Sealed  $20

Rumpf, Inga: Second-Hand Mädchen (GER) Gatefold/Philips-GER/75   Rare solo album by former Atlantis and Frumpy vocalist.  VG++/M--  $62

Rundgren, Todd: A Wizard/A True Star (USA) Gatefold/Bearsville-USA/73   The title pretty much says it all when it comes to Todd.  Cover has die-cut corners.  boc, cw  F+++/P  $3

Rundgren, Todd: Runt (USA) Bearsville-HOL/76   boc  E---/E  $13

Runrig: The Cutter and the Clan (scO) Ridge/Chyrsalis-USA/87   Don’t know how many albums these guys have, but hopefully there’s more than this one, because they’re quite good.  Rock mixed with Scottish folk influences; instrumentation includes bagpipes, accordion, mandolin.  Reminds me a tad of Claanad at times.  pstp, rw  G+/E- $13

Runestaff: Runestaff (ENG)  Heavy Metal-ENG/85   btc  E---/E-  $10

Runt: We Gotta get you a Woman/Baby, let’s Swing/The last Thing you Said/Don’t tie my Hands (USA)  7" Sing./Ampex-USA/70   Todd Rundgren’s early group.  wol  NA/P+  $4, or in Ampex Records sleeve  NA/VG++ $15

(Rush): Rush Retrospective  Book/Core Music-USA/88   Collection of sheet music, from their first album through Hold your Fire.  About 40 selections in all.  A few loose pages in the middle, but they’re all there.  Some writing on the table of contents page.  256 pages.    $12

Rush: 2112 (CAN)  RE?/Mercury-USA/76   E-/M-  $8

Russell, George, & the Living Time Orchestra: The African Game (USA) Blue Note-USA/85   Record looks perfect, but it’s a poor pressing on the first track of each side.  Otherwise, plays as indicated.  blc, pstp, sm troc, sl rw  F++/E--  $16

Rutherford, Mike: Time and Time Again/At the End of the Day  7" Sing./PS/Charisma-ENG/80   The sleeve says that the B-side is “At the end of the Day,” but some copies of this single were accidentally pressed up with “Overnight Job” as the B-side, and this is one of them.  E/VG++  $23

Rutherford, Mike: Acting Very Strange (ENG) Atlantic-USA/82  What a difference two years makes!  His second solo effort, not nearly as interesting as his first.  Guests include Stewart Copeland and Daryl Stuermer.  sc, sm boc  E-/M-  $5

Rutherford, Mike: Smallcreep’s Day (ENG) Passport-USA/80  A great solo album (especially considering how relatively late it came out) by the bassist for Genesis.  If you like their classic material, you’ll definitely want this.  His old mate Anthony Phillips plays keyboards (!), Noel McCalla sings, and Simon Phillips and Morris Pert play drums and percussion, respectively.  boc  E-/M---  $12

Ryan, Ross: A Poem you can Keep (USA)  EMI-AUS/73   Folksy singer-songwriter album from a guy who was born in Kansas, but lives in Australia—or at least he did in 1973.  woc, rw  G--/G+  $10
